Salivary/Thyroid Gland Disorders

THYROID DISORDERS

The thyroid gland is an endocrine gland that makes many regulatory hormones for our body.  It is located in the middle of the lower portion of the neck and is shaped like a butterfly.  If this gland becomes abnormally shaped, does not function properly, or develops unusual masses or nodules, an ENT will assist in physical exam and diagnostic work up to determine the treatment needed.  In some cases, the ENT will need to perform surgery to remove all or a portion of the thyroid gland.

Evaluation and diagnostic testing may include the following:

  • Physical exam
  • Evaluation of the voice box with a mirror or flexible telescope
  • Ultrasound
  • Blood tests
  • Fine needle aspiration biopsy
  • Chest X-Ray
  • CT scans

SALIVARY GLAND DISORDERS

There are numerous salivary glands located primarily in and around the mouth.  These glands produce and excrete saliva that helps to break down food as well as for the protection of our teeth and mucous membranes.  Sometimes these glands can become enlarged/inflamed or obstructed due to a mass, stone, or infection.  An ENT can evaluate and treat salivary gland problems with medication, office procedures, and sometimes surgery.

Evaluation and diagnostic testing may include the following:

  • Physical exam
  • Ultrasound
  • CT Scan
  • Culture
